Originally called Beano, Bingo can be traced back to Italy in 1530. Edwin S. Lowe renamed Beano to Bingo after overhearing somebody mispronounce Beano. The first known game of Bingo in the United States was in the early 1900's. A Columbia University math professor, Carl Leffler, had created 6,000 different combinations of bingo cards by 1930. It is said that Professor Leffler later went insane. By 1934 Bingo was being played in several churches to help raise funds. Today over $90 million dollars are spent weekly in Bingo games all over North America.
Bingo is a very simple game. Constisting of cards with 5 collums and 5 rows, making up 25 squares. Each square on the card has a number on it. There are slight variations how the game is played, but the game pretty much stays the same. As the random numbers are picked out of the basket at the front of the room, it is then announced to the players. Players then mark the squares, which when rows, columns, or even diagional lines are filled in a player would yell "BINGO". Usually people can join the game for a few dollars, but some games can get so huge that the winner can end up with hundreds, if not thousands of dollars per game.
